If you ever visit Medan, North Sumatra, you might have been to Lake Toba, Bukit Lawang or Brastagi. Recently people in Medan discovered a place called Tinggi Raja. You might want to consider visiting this place which they called ‘Hot Snow’ or ‘White Crater/Kawah Putih’ area because the ground is composed of white limestone and  it has the beautiful blue hot springs pool. The scenery here is amazing and kind of strange to find it here in North Sumatra.

The place was located at the remote area 3-4 hours drive South from the city of Medan. Since this is a remote place, the infrastructure is still in a very bad shape or not maintain at all even by the local people. You should start early so that you can beat the crowd and have the place for your own. But, be prepared to pay (Rp. 1000/person) to use one of the wooden stage to take photos, this is an illegal activity which should be regulated by the authorities which I hope one day they will work more on the infrastructure to preserve the area. And keep in mind that and be very careful when visiting this place, since there are a lot of local people who say you need someone to guide you around, but in fact this place is not hard to navigate by your own as long as you use common sense and not jumping to the hot spring. There is a place to do just that at the river beside the hot spring by going down the stairs which you can just chill out, relax or even dipping your foot to the water which is the mixture of water and the hot spring.

Even though the effort to visit this place is huge, but I think it was well worth it, I would say this is our own mini Yellowstone in US. And don’t forget to bring your own food with you since local just sold instant noddle with an inflated price. And while on the way back, we found this pretty amazing place where you can see the small Blue Hot Spring pool which spew hot smoke which look rather similar to the Emerald Pool from Yellowstone National Park.

Hello, I will go to Medan with two friends in April next year. We find this stunning place. Would you give us more travel tips as we do not find many information?
How did you get there? Should public transport, coach, local tour or what is appropriated? How long spend there, any hiking route? Is it near two colours waterfall as we plan to be there too, we would stay two nights near two colours waterfall.
    Thanks in advance.
